What Clinicians Mean by ‘Sex Addiction’
The term sex addiction is widely used to describe patterns of sexual behavior that feel uncontrollable and cause significant personal distress. While this phrase is common, the clinical and medical communities utilize more precise, diagnostic language to frame the condition from a health-oriented perspective, free from moral judgment.
The current clinical designation is Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD), which is included in the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as an impulse-control disorder.
Framing the issue as CSBD allows for a structured, effective, and compassionate treatment approach. This clinical perspective change the focus from shame and secrecy toward a process of healing, skill development, and building a meaningful life.
The objective is to understand and address the underlying drivers of the behavior, which are often connected to unresolved trauma, anxiety, depression, or other co-occurring mental health conditions.
