Family Therapy in Drug and Alcohol Rehab
As previously mentioned, alcohol or drug use can often strain interpersonal relationships, and a substance user can find themselves at a distance from the people closest to them.
Many treatment facilities offer family therapy as part of their services, and this form of therapy serves two purposes in addiction treatment. First, it serves to help people and their loved ones repair their relationships by letting them resolve issues and improve their communication.
Secondly, it serves to educate loved ones on the nature of addiction and recovery. Many people have this notion that overcoming addiction is a matter of willpower, but family therapy at an alcohol and drug rehab center can help loved ones who may hold this belief become more informed on addiction.
Educating family members can also help people learn how to best support a person’s recovery from substance use disorder, allowing them to become active participants in the recovery process.
